I have been writing my research proposal for 701, my first draft was too formal and was more an essay format than a research proposal. I researched into research proposal format to see how they are written and what format they take. (click images below to open research sites)
I have used the research to help me structure a new draft proposal for my project. I broke it down into sections and then started to write out the points in more detail(1). I found that research proposals are usually between 2500 to 3000 words long and cover different points intended to outline the idea. These are the points I have broken the project down into and what I will need to cover in my research proposal:
Title ? - Think of title
Abstract - 100 words - Question I will address/ what am I going to do
Research Question - Questions I will answer, how will you approach answering these questions
Aims & Objectives - The aims are what your project will ultimately achieve, rather than how you’ll get there.
Context - Brief background of the field - current knowledge
Methodology & Methods - How am i going to research to get the answer
Schedule - What will I do when?
Significance of Research - How does my work add to industry, show is originality
Reflection
This research proposal is very challenging to write as it is very different to anything else I have written. The research that I did above as well as speaking to my tutor has helped me a lot with how I need to structure my work, and what I need to include, however my writing is still very future and concept based. Research proposals need to be written in present tense and say where the project is presently as well as been backed up by multiple research theories, which while my draft does include some, it needs more.
While I like the idea of my project, it has started to make me feel overwhelmed and like it is overly ambitious for the time I have. Each week the software, processes and techniques I would need to learn and test to complete the project grows and is starting to feel like a mountain.
The mountain currently includes: ZBrush, Dragonframe - for VR, Green screening - Adobe after effects, Microsoft Maquette, Adobe Medium, Quill, Maya, 3DS Max, 3D Printing - documents, software, printers and sources, Playmaker, Unity, Unreal engine, Touchdesigner, Photogrammetry, Meshroom, Lidor, Camera, Match frames, Coding, C-sharp, 3D scanning, How to put game in VR.
I am going to take some time to reflect on my project and see if changes should and can be made to either simplify it or if I need to back track completely.
