Character Design - Elf

 For one of my final characters I decided to create an elf, as my scenario involved the elf sneaking into a troll cave I wanted a dark outfit that was something that could almost act as a camouflage, I also wanted something armourmed but natural and moveable to fit with the elf theme. 

This is my finished character that uses the characteristics I had listed out.

After this I made a finished version that I added colour to, I also made some variations of colours. I'm not sure what colour variation I want to use yet, it may be that certain colours won't work in photogrammetry, so I will need to research this before my final choice is made.

I also made a few rough expressions.

After producing these I decided that the face was a little too pointed and that while I still wanted to keep the pointed chin characteristic, the extreme in this version was too much and made the face look odd. After this I edited the face and made different variations of structure, by changing the jaw and forehead. 

I think this works much better and gives the characters face much more structure. 

Now that I have my first finished character, I need to produce a finished expression sheet, pose sheet, turn around and build sheets for the armature and head.

I also need to develop the second character and have a finished rendition of them. 

Project Check in

After making changes to my project, I did start to stress that I did not have time to complete all the necessary elements that I now need for the pitch bible, which delayed me as I saw the giant list to do and then got overwhelmed and didn't know what to start.  

Over the last couple of weeks I have made a list of what I want to do and then tried to give myself daily goals, I realised on friday that the daily goals I were setting myself were unrealistic for me to achieve, since this I am just making a bullet point list of things I want to work on and then I am picking things off the list that I fancy doing that day. 

It is going to be a push to get this done in time but I should hopefully be ok and get everything I need done for the hand in. 

This week I want to get all my character design completed and have made progress if not have completed all the different design sheets. I have this week off work so I should have more time to work on the drawings. 

Character Development

 As my idea had changed and I am now creating 2 puppets to test with, I needed to design the 2 characters which I would then turn into puppets. I decided to base these characters in the fantasy genre as this is what I mostly watch myself and has a greater chance of keeping my interest. 

I didn't want to create the puppets for a particular story, so I instead made a mindmap of possible character types/creatures based in fantasy and myth that I could make. As I want the puppets to have 3D printed faces I wanted a human/ humanoid character to show off a range of expressions, I also wanted a character that was a creature so that I could experiment with how expressions are created on a non human character. 

After making a mindmap, I narrowed down the characters to a few options. I then made some moodboards for these to collect some ideas.

Troll

Ogre

At first I was going to create an Ent character and drew this rough design, but I realised this would be very complicated to scan using photogrammetry because of all the branches. Once I realised this I changed my character idea, I made sure to keep the scanning and photogrammetry in mind when picking the next characters. 

After creating the moodboards I also noticed that some characters I have picked have very similar features, such as the fae and elves and trolls and ogres. I decided to use these similarities and create my two characters as a mix of 2 different types then I can decide on which they are later. I am going to create a Fae/ Elf as my human/ humanoid character and a  troll/ ogre as my creature character. These two characters also mean that I can experiment with scale, both for when I create the puppets but also to find out what the limits are when it comes to photogrammetry. 

I then started to draw some really rough character designs using these as reference, I also used my previous experience in stop motion when drawing these roughs as stop motion puppets are often not as realistic or detailed as a lot of these reference images or the puppets cross into the uncanny valley and start to look creepy/ scary. Because of this I simplified the characters a lot and instead focused on the feature traits the characters seem to have. 

Elves/ Fae - 

• have small delicate bone structure

• often pointed features, such as a pointed chin

•  they have large eyes

• pointed ears or varying length

• long hair of a range of colours both natural (real world colours) and unnatural colours like blue

• skin tone - they are most often shown with fair skin, but they are also shown with darker skin tone and unnatural skin tones like blue and green. 

• small/ delicate bone structure

• Long even limbs

• Balanced

• Poised stature (like a ballerina) 

• Sometimes with wings

• Outfits that mimic their location

Troll/ Ogre -

• Long arms

• Large feet

• Small heads

• Very large or very small ears often positioned low on the head

• Noses are very large or very small

• Uneven facial structure

• Large body structure

• Rudimentary weapons

• Large teeth

• Outfits are rags or armour

• Usually draw to be scary but can be cute like the box trolls

• Often bald but have beards a lot

• Sometimes have a bark or rock texture of their environment 

So that I know what expressions I need to create instead of making lots of random expressions, I need to create a short story or scenario where the two characters can interact. These are the initial ideas I have for the story. 

Draft story/ scenario 

Idea 1

Troll living under a bridge has stolen something the elf wants, the troll is sleeping, the elf sneaks in, the troll stirs and looks around, the elf hides. Troll falls back asleep, the elf sneaks again and reaches the object. 

Ending 1- troll wakes and catches the elf, they fight and the elf escapes, the troll rors 

Ending 2- troll wakes and catches the elf, the elf escapes and the troll looks sad

Ending 3 - The troll wakes and catches the elf, they fight, the troll is injured and starts to cry, the elf realsies the troll isn't bad and stops and comforts them, they split the item and share it.

Idea 2

Troll living under a bridge, an elf who is lost and wandering, slumps down at the bridge in defeat, troll sees and invites them into the home for food. 

Next steps

My next steps are to write out a draft story/ scenario in more detail, refine and finish characters and then start to create character sheets.

Overall idea - VR and stop motion

Abstract/ brief outline of the idea

• This project focuses on the first stages of testing and development needed to create an interactive, virtual reality, stop motion animation. 

• initial production processes needed to create characters for stop motion films and then capture these characters digitally using photogrammetry.
