Planning changes

As part of 703, I presented my proposed project to the class as part of the animation subject specialist session. This presentation went really well and allowed me to present a focused view of the project as a whole. After this presentation, I had a subject specialist session and spoke with Michaela about the work.

Slide 1

  • Name

  • Course - I am on the part time MA and this is my second year.

  • So so far I have completed 701 (project proposal), 702 and 704 (dissertation)

  • Introduction to who I am, My degree is animation,

  • I am a teacher of animation and game design and my work spans these subjects.

  • I work in Stop Motion, Puppet Fabrication, VR, 2D animation, Pre Production, Digital Sculpting and More.

Slide 2

Project in a nutshell

  • Focuses on the combination of stop motion animation in VR

  • How stop motion footage can be captured and put into a virtual space, to be watched and progressed to be made fully immersive and interactive.

  • Longer project than MA so will cover progression later

Slide 3

Context -

  • The project has a large context and background because it spans across so many areas

  • Disertaion focused on presence theory, immersion in VR, haptics and embodied memories

  • Dissertation looked at my theory of how embodied memories in stop motion can contribute to the overall sense of immersion in virtual reality spaces.

  • Embodied memories are when an object is imbued with memories through touch, it can be both experienced by the animator and the audience and helps create a connection between the audience and the work.

  • Looked at if embodied memories can make it more immersive

  •  Looked at the work of Jan svankmajer, the brothers quay, Phil Tippett, as well as more mainstream VR pieces of work.

Inspiration and examples

  • Phil Tippett - Mad God

  • Isle of Dogs

  • Jan Svankmajr - Alice

  • Brother Quay - street of crocodiles

  • Feliex and Pul - Gymnasium

  • Baobab Studios - Baba Yaga

  • Disney - Myth

  • Occulus story studios - Henry

  • Wolves in the walls

  • The key

  • Angellica

  • Gloomy Eyes

  • The line

  • The corpse bride

Slide 5

Project overview

  • Look at pipelines

  • Testing, upskilling and learning

  • Traditional and digital

  • softwares

Slide 6

  • Softwares to learn for different areas

Slide 7

  • Studios and people to contact

Slide 8

Methodology

  • Method - Action Research

  • Qualative research

  • Contextual reviews

  • Critical analysis

  • Case studies

  • Project stages using action research

Slide 9 and 10

  • Learnt all I need and then identify what is best

  • Made industry contacts and have a professional presence

  • Have a test piece along with a written paper that proves the theory

  • Have a published article

  • Have a PhD proposal and place

Once again I had been over-ambitious with the project and had set too many goals. The number of technical skills I had set myself to learn for the 703 unit was unachievable. After speaking to Michaela about the work that I need to submit for 703, I changed my idea and made it more attainable.

My next actions from the supervision meetings were

  • Emma to prepare presentation for Interim Critique in Week 6 taking the above into consideration.

  • Re-read your dissertation to highlight the potential criteria you’ve identified and can use for analysis and evaluation.

  • Develop the research framework – methodology/methods you’ll apply for the final tests. Draw on theory from dissertation, incorporate skills development (learning software etc) - articulate how you gather analyse evaluative data/outcomes to draw your conclusions

  • Continue to ask whether your focus lies in the technical pipeline, embodied memory/ immersion or a combination of these…the balance can continue to shift but you need to keep this as a question while you’re defining the framework.

  •  Emma to continue building/developing industry networks…

My changes to the work for 703 are:

  1. Use 703 to define methodologies for 705 and future - how am I gathering data, what criteria will I use to analyse and evaluate my process and outcomes, how will I draw conclusions/ insights/ knowledge from my tests/practice-based enquiry. - This will create a written document/ chapter of my PhD proposal/conference paper.

  2. Start to do some practical tests of work, this must be started by week 7 or will not have time.

  3. Continue to keep a record of the project on my blog, and then refine down and put it on the website - similar to the 701 submission.

The work I need to hand in for 703:

  1. Record - blog

  2. Animatic - test recording

  3. Pitch - a written chapter for methodology
